Un blogger è colui che scrive e gestisce un blog, mentre l’insieme di tutti i blog (circa 133 milioni indicizzati da Technorati) viene detto blogsfera o blogosfera. Alcuni blog si possono considerare veri e propri diari personali o collettivi, nel senso che sono utilizzati per mettere on-line le storie personali e i momenti importanti della propria vita. In questo contesto la riservatezza, il privato, il personale va verso la collettività. Naturalmente nel grosso calderone della blogosfera, in questo brodo primordiale di intelligenza collettiva, ce ne è un pò per tutti i gusti, come, ad esempio, le facce levigate di fard delle modelle e quelle insanguinate dei dimostranti per le strade di Teheran.
Dopo aver scelto di cosa parlare, il dominio e l’hosting vi servirà una piattaforma. La più usata è sicuramente WordPress che ha una community molto florida in Italia: basta andare su http://it.wordpress.com/ per scaricarne il pacchetto localizzato in italiano, i plug-in e interagire con il forum.
Ci si iscrive, si crea un indirizzo che comprende il nome della piattaforma (esempio fittizio: gastonemariotti.wordpress.com), si sceglie il cosiddetto Theme, cioè quale aspetto dare al proprio blog, si impara a usare la bacheca (dove si controlla tutto il blog), mettere Tag e categorie, amministrare gli eventuali commenti, aggiungere o togliere widget, e via dicendo. Per una configurazione base in genere non si paga nulla, mentre per avere più servizi i prezzi variano.
Componenti fondamentali dei blog sono i post, cioè gli articoli che compaiono nella homepage e che in genere sono visualizzati a scorrimento; il Blogroll, i siti e altri blog che l’autore consiglia e che solitamente appaiono in una colonnina a fianco ai post; l’archivio dei post pubblicati; tag, termini che si associano ai post per facilitare l’indicizzazione sui motori di ricerca e nell’archivio interno del blog, e categorie. Attraverso i commenti si esprimono opinioni su quanto scritto nei post. Molte componenti sono opzionali, e se ne possono aggiungere altre come il calendario, una barra per la ricerca e molte altre. Tutti questi sono denominati “widget”, gadget di abbellimento o di servizio.
Per sapere quali sono i blog più letti in Italia si possono consultare due classifiche che seguono criteri leggermente diversi, una tenuta da Blogbabel, controllato adesso dal network Liquida e l’altra da Wikio. Attualmente il più letto secondo Liquida è Il Blog di Beppe Grillo, seguito da Piovono Rane (il blog di Alessandro Gilioli, il blogger dell’anno 2010) e Wittgenstein (il blog di Luca Sofri). Wikio divide in 10 categorie diverse (costume e società, politica, high tech, cultura, ambiente, tempo libero…) e per ognuna ha una apposita graduatoria dei blog più seguiti.
Calcolare quanti blog ci sono in Italia è molto difficile. Si stima che ce ne possano essere più di 3 milioni. Il problema è quello di capire quanti di questi sono effettivamente attivi e aggiornati, quanti abbandonati o addirittura mai avviati. I blog infatti sono molto democratici: chiunque può averne uno e scrivere quello che vuole (limitatamente alla leggi vigenti: il reato di diffamazione esiste anche online), ma può anche abbandonarlo senza dover rendere conto a nessuno.
Con i blog si può provare anche a guadagnare qualche soldino con la pubblicità online (vedi meccanismi come quelli Google Adsense), ma è molto difficile guadagnare cifre considerevoli, generalmente ci si ripaga giusto l’hosting.
